What to expect during the consultation with Osteopaths Walters~Pearce

You will be seen by a fully qualified Registered Osteopath.

We realise that some people are nervous about visiting an Osteopath, therefore you are always welcome to bring a friend or relation into the treatment room with you if you wish.

Please always ask the Osteopath to explain anything they say or do at any time during your appointment as feedback is important, and working together will benefit your recovery. If you feel any discomfort at any time, PLEASE do inform the practitioner.

The Osteopath will ask detailed questions about yourself, to learn about your current complaint, about your general health, any medication you are taking, about your previous medical history including operations and illnesses, and all about your lifestyle.

Some questions may seem not relevant to you and unnecessary but all this information is essential and important to help the Osteopath make an accurate diagnosis and plan an appropriate and safe treatment for you.

The Osteopath will need to examine the area which is causing problems and also other areas which may relate to your condition, therefore you will usually be asked to undress to your underwear. You may wish to bring loose shorts to wear, also towels are available for your comfort.

Initially your posture will be observed and you will be asked to perform certain simple movements in order to assess your problem.

Further assessment will then normally be performed whilst you lie on the examination couch. The Osteopath will do various tests to assess joint mobility, muscle power and neurological symptoms. They may need to take your blood pressure or perform other appropriate tests. The Osteopath will use palpation techniques to feel the injured tissues.

A diagnosis can then be discussed with you. If you are agreeable, treatment can proceed. If the Osteopath does not think you will benefit from osteopathic treatment, they will explain this to you and suggest alternative solutions, or refer you to your GP or possibly for MRI investigations.

After treatment, advice will be given to you to support the treatment and your comfort, to assist your recovery.

To gain the maximum benefit from treatment – for the first 48 hours we suggest you take care and rest more. If you have any concerns or questions, DO NOT WAIT for your next appointment PLEASE ring the practice and ask.

If you have any questions before you see the Osteopath please ask the Receptionist. Please always remember, we are here to help, and offer advice.
